Toshiba Corporation is one of the world's largest manufacturers of semiconductors by revenue. Products include flash memory, discrete semiconductors, mixed-signal ICs, as well as its television screens and electronic appliances. Toshiba was first launched as Tokyo Shibaura Electric K.K in 1938 and was quickly nicknamed Toshiba, which name it officially embraced in 1978. Toshiba is recognized to be the first to have brought several items to Japan, such as radar, TAC digital computer, microwave ovens, Japanese word processor, and HD DVD. In 1987, Toshiba was involved in the Toshiba-Kongsberg scandal which strained US-Japan relations. At the same time, a subsidiary, Tocibai Machine, was accused to violating the CoCom agreement by selling CNC machines used to produce submarine propellers to the Soviet Union
